"Tolerantie in tegenspoed veroorzaakt kennis van God" is an engraving by Dirck Volckertsz Coornhert. It’s part of a series of virtues, reflecting the intense religious and philosophical debates of the 16th century. Coornhert was a writer, philosopher, translator, politician and artist, who argued for religious tolerance during the Reformation. In this engraving, we see a muscular, bearded man in classical garb, his helmet topped with a lion, a symbol of strength. He holds a dish with eyes, representing insight, and a torch, symbolizing enlightenment, or the light of knowledge. The inscription, ‘Tolerance in adversity causes knowledge of God,’ encapsulates Coornhert’s belief that tolerance, even in tough times, leads to understanding and divine knowledge. It challenges the rigid dogmas of the time, advocating for a more inclusive approach to faith. Coornhert's message still resonates today, reminding us of the importance of dialogue. His work encourages us to seek knowledge and understanding, even when it's hard.
