Curator: What a striking image. John Deusing’s "Untitled (woman seated at decorated desk)" presents a seated woman amidst what seems to be a festive, yet cluttered, office space. Editor: It feels almost theatrical, doesn't it? The garlands create an overwhelming sense of... celebration, perhaps? But the woman seems to be at work. Curator: Precisely. Look at the typewriter, the desk piled high with papers and decor, even what looks like a telephone number scrawled on a chalkboard. This speaks to the materiality of office work, the ways in which labor is embedded in a specific context, a specific room. Editor: And I'm struck by the juxtaposition of the festive decor with the office setting. Garlands are traditionally associated with celebration and joy. Could this be a comment on the commodification of joy, where even work spaces are imbued with symbols meant to evoke positive emotions? Curator: Possibly. The way Deusing captures it, though, brings into focus the means of production within this space. We can see how she works and lives, simultaneously. Editor: An interesting point. I think it is a rather eerie image, however, that could be interpreted in numerous ways. Curator: Indeed, it does invite such reflections. Editor: Ultimately, Deusing asks us to consider the myriad ways in which we produce and find meaning in the world around us.
