About this artwork

This portrait of Adriaen Pietersz van de Venne, the painter and poet, was made by Arnoud van Halen, likely in the early 18th century. It is painted with astonishing detail, especially considering it's not much bigger than the palm of your hand. Although we can’t know for sure, portraits like these were typically painted in watercolor or oil on a thin slice of ivory. This precious material lent a subtle translucence to the sitter’s face. It was the perfect ground for the stippling and cross-hatching that bring van de Venne to life. The fine brushwork tells us a lot about the social context. In a pre-photographic era, there was a market for miniaturized likenesses, often to be kept as mementos or worn as jewelry. And to have one done on costly ivory? That really speaks to the sitter's and the artist's social standing. While many painters worked at a larger scale, Halen excelled here. It really puts a premium on deftness and the value of skilled handwork. Paintings like this are a reminder of the many ways that artistry can be brought to bear, and how materials, techniques, and social use are all interwoven.
