This print, "Korsetnaaister," probably made with engraving or etching, shows a woman who could be a seamstress. What strikes me is the limited tonal range. The subtle gradations of gray, from the almost-white paper to the darker shadows, create a delicate, airy feel. Look at the lines used to define her dress. They're so fine, so controlled. There's a real elegance in how the artist has used these marks to suggest form and texture, like the folds of her skirt. The eye is really drawn into the details of the bonnet and lace collar, where the layering of the marks creates a sense of depth. It reminds me a little of some of the works by early photorealist painters. There’s a similar attention to detail, but also a kind of detachment, as if the artist is observing the subject from a distance. Art is always a conversation, an exchange of ideas, and it’s never really fixed in meaning.
