This engraving, Allegory of Science, presents an array of symbols reflecting knowledge and its discontents. At the center, a weeping woman covers her face, a poignant gesture resonating with expressions of grief found across epochs, from ancient mourning figures to modern photography. Note the snakes, coiled around a box filled with scrolls: wisdom, yes, but also danger. This recalls the serpent in Eden, a tempter offering forbidden knowledge, a motif echoed in the caduceus, a symbol of medicine. Yet here, they seem to guard secrets that bring sorrow. Above, celestial bodies and figures dance in the aether, while another, radiating light, rides a chariot. This evokes classical notions of enlightenment, yet the weeping woman suggests a darker undercurrent. The pursuit of knowledge, it seems, is not without its pain. The bat, an emblem of ignorance, seems to emerge from behind her. These symbols, though rooted in their time, speak to our collective memory. The eternal struggle between light and darkness, knowledge and ignorance, continues its cyclical progression, surfacing in art and culture, evolving with each telling.
