Giovanni Antonio Pellegrini created this ink and wash drawing of Saint Peter on clouds in the first half of the 18th century. Its airy lightness is typical of the Venetian artist’s preparatory sketches. This image relies on a tradition of depicting the key Christian saint as an aged man with a beard, robed and holding a key to the Kingdom of Heaven. The drawing suggests the importance of the Roman Catholic Church as an institution in 18th century Venice. It also subtly asserts the Church’s power by portraying its founding figure floating on clouds, as if in the heavens. Venetian art from this time often reflects religious themes, in part because the Church was a significant patron. A deeper understanding of this artwork comes from examining its cultural and historical context. Investigating the history of religious institutions in Venice, and the ways they shaped artistic patronage, helps in our interpretation. Art is often made within specific social and institutional settings, so art history is essential for revealing the conditions of its creation.
