Curator: The lithograph, "And during this time, they continue to affirm that which will never be restored!" by Honoré Daumier depicts a figure in repose. It’s somber, isn't it? Editor: It feels like a dark dream, all those scratchy lines. The figure in the coffin just exudes defeat. I wonder what Daumier was feeling. Curator: This print was made in 1872, a time of intense political upheaval in France. Daumier, through the medium of lithography, critiqued the powerful and their attachment to past regimes. Look how the text is integrated. Editor: Absolutely. It's as if the newsprint itself is part of the mourning process. I feel like Daumier wanted to drag those leaders kicking and screaming into the present. Curator: The production of such imagery had consequences; Daumier certainly understood the power of accessible art. Editor: Art can be so dangerous, can't it? I'm drawn to the vulnerability and the resistance in this piece. It stays with you.
