Curatorial notes
This card, depicting Clarkson, a Boston pitcher, was made around 1888 by Goodwin & Company as part of the Old Judge Cigarettes series. The photographic image, printed on card stock, was a cutting-edge form of mass media at the time. Consider the confluence of factors that enabled its production: photographic technology, industrialized printing, and the rise of both professional baseball and cigarette consumption. This card was, in essence, a miniature billboard, capitalizing on Clarkson's fame to sell a product. Each card represents a small piece of paper, but a great deal of industrial infrastructure. The sepia tone of the print speaks to the limited color palettes of early photography, yet also lends the image a nostalgic quality today. It's a reminder that even seemingly simple objects can be rich with cultural and economic significance. By looking closely at how it was made, we gain insight into the world it inhabited.
