De Ruyter & Meijer created "Schepen," a collection of engravings which capture the maritime culture and the lives intertwined with it. These images offer glimpses into the relationship between the Dutch and the sea. Each scene narrates a different aspect of maritime life. We see fishing boats braving stormy waters, figures atop a cliff overlooking the sea, and bustling harbor scenes where people load boats, each telling its own story of labor, resilience, and connection to the water. The inclusion of text beneath each image further enriches the narrative. It draws us into the emotional and social dimensions of the scenes. Maritime culture has historically shaped the Dutch identity, influencing trade, exploration, and cultural exchange. "Schepen" serves not only as a visual record of this history, but it also honors the human experiences. It reflects the struggles and triumphs of those whose lives were shaped by the sea. It invites us to reflect on our relationship with the natural world and the human stories embedded within it.
