This is a model of a buoy, made by Jacobus Boelen in the 19th century, embodying a rich tapestry of symbols. At the heart of the buoy's design, the prominent sphere atop a mast-like structure evokes images of world orbs, emblems of navigation and control. It is reminiscent of Atlas bearing the heavens, a burden symbolizing mankind's eternal quest for understanding and mastery over the world. This symbol has transformed through history, originally representing divine power and cosmic order, now signifying human ambition and the desire for knowledge. The vessel's form stirs profound subconscious memories, mirroring a protective womb navigating uncharted emotional waters, or perhaps even Charon's boat, ferrying souls into the unknown. The buoy, more than a mere maritime marker, is a potent cultural symbol whose significance is far from linear, it resurfaces, evolves, and acquires new meanings in changing historical contexts.
