Celestino Degoix captured this view of the Porta San Matteo in Genoa with photography during the late 19th century. The doorway is flanked by intricately carved columns adorned with floral motifs, symbols of renewal and continuity, reminiscent of ancient Roman gateways. Above the doorway, winged figures—cherubs—are carved. These figures are also drawn from antiquity and infused with Christian meaning, representing divine love and messengers of a higher power. The archway motif appears in triumphal arches from the Roman Empire through Renaissance cityscapes. Each era infuses it with new socio-political meanings. These symbolic entrances and portals, laden with cultural memory, remind us that symbols are not static but fluid entities in a perpetual state of becoming.
