This United States Twenty-dollar Gold Piece was conceived by Augustus Saint-Gaudens at the turn of the century. Imagine holding this little disc in your hand. It is a world—burnished, refined, and compressed. I wonder about the process of making this coin, pressing an image into the metal, the labor and the care. I imagine Saint-Gaudens, the sculptor, translating his monumental vision into this miniature form, coaxing the metal to capture the weight and dynamism of Lady Liberty striding forward. There's a tension between the grand allegory and the everyday object, between art and utility. Its yellow is luxurious, with a deeply embedded image of Liberty. The dots around the circumference create an almost vibrating energy field. I’m sure Saint-Gaudens studied other coins, looking at the history of painting and sculpture and how to make something feel monumental, even in a minor key. Artists are always in conversation, riffing off one another, changing the game. This coin isn’t just money; it’s a piece of art, a piece of history, a tangible symbol of a nation's ideals and aspirations.
