Léon Laroche created this print of two doors with curtains, using etching and engraving. Consider the intimate spaces these curtains adorned. Curtains aren't merely functional; they also perform identity, offering a glimpse into the cultural values of the inhabitants. The ways in which domestic spaces were adorned can illuminate gender roles in the home, as well as social aspirations. Note the textures and colors, and how they might evoke certain sensibilities or tastes of the time. These curtains can suggest something about privacy and display, revealing or concealing the lives of the people who dwelled within. These curtains quietly uphold standards, whispering stories of decorum, identity, and the ever-evolving landscape of domestic life.
