This exterior view of one of Joseph Cheetham’s weaving mills in Russia captures a moment in time. It's sepia-toned, like a memory softened by age. What I imagine Cheetham was thinking when he made this: I see a big structure, a symbol of industry maybe, but then also, light pouring in through all those windows. He was probably thinking about the future. How does one represent industrialisation? The photograph's surface has a kind of texture to it, like the old brickwork of the factory itself. You can almost feel the weight of those beams and the activity inside. It reminds me that art isn't just about beauty; it's about documenting, questioning, and feeling the world around us. Artists are always in conversation with their world, responding to it, and imagining new ways of seeing.
