Curatorial notes

Nicolas Maurin created this print, “Portret van Adam Pijnacker,” in the 19th century. It exists as part of a long tradition of portraiture that often reinforced the status and identity of its subjects. Here, we see Adam Pijnacker, identifiable by the text below the image. Pijnacker lived in the 17th century and was a well-known painter of Dutch landscapes. Maurin, working two centuries later, revives Pijnacker through the lens of 19th-century sensibilities. Pijnacker's attire, including the hat and draped robe, signifies a certain status, possibly academic or civic. It reflects an effort to memorialize and perhaps ennoble the Dutch master for a new era. The choice to depict Pijnacker in this way speaks to the 19th-century’s interest in reclaiming and reinterpreting its artistic heritage, and asks us to consider how the identities of artists shift across time. It is a potent reminder of how we construct and reconstruct our understanding of the past.
