Editor: We are looking at "Untitled" by Antonio Bueno. It's an oil painting, and there is a strangeness to the scene. It feels both domestic and unsettling, almost like a dreamscape. What's your interpretation of this work? Curator: This "dreamscape" isn’t so distant from reality. The materials themselves – oil on canvas – are steeped in art history, a tradition the artist both embraces and questions. Look at the highly constructed space, the furniture. We’re not looking at found objects, but carefully rendered simulacra of comfort. The very making reveals a questioning of domestic ideals. Are we consuming comfort or constructing a cage? Editor: I see what you mean. So you’re focusing on the chairs not just as objects in the painting, but as signs of larger social ideas around domesticity and even confinement through production? Curator: Precisely! And think about the labor involved. The painting simulates depth and volume using traditional perspective, while also challenging our consumption of it, creating almost impossible geometries. The application of paint is a process – an activity of production and reproduction—which invites consideration. Does the artwork reaffirm the values of tradition or actively work to dismantle them? Editor: That's interesting! The artist doesn’t seem to provide clear answers, do they? They leave it open. Curator: Not at all. The tension lies in that very ambiguity. The process reveals an art making not bound by classical perspective but bound by classical art. So what assumptions do we bring, and what happens when we start digging deeper? What assumptions around high and low art might we interrogate based on material usage, for instance? Editor: Thinking about it that way has given me a new perspective on this artwork.
