Cy Twombly made Quattro Stagioni II. Inverno with paint on canvas, and it feels like he was in a real conversation with winter itself. Look at those dominant gestural marks, mostly black, white, and a bit of unexpected yellow – it’s like watching a storm unfold, layer by layer. I imagine Twombly stepping back, squinting, then lunging forward to add another swipe of paint. Was he thinking about the bleakness of winter, or maybe the strange beauty of a frozen landscape? The paint isn't too thick, but you can see how each brushstroke has its own texture, its own story to tell. That one long drip of white paint, right near the top, feels like a frozen waterfall, or maybe just a tear. Twombly's work always reminds me that art is an ongoing dialogue. He was influenced by so many painters who came before him, and he, in turn, has inspired countless others. When we embrace ambiguity, we create space for new meanings to emerge.
