Walter Hochstrasser made this drawing of a Candle Mold, we don't know when, but isn't it something? The warm palette makes it feel familiar, like finding an old tool in the attic, one with history. Look at the way he's rendered the wood grain, so smooth you can almost feel the polish. The details, they are so precise, especially in the floral carvings running down the mold. Each petal, each leaf, it's all there, painstakingly observed and rendered. It's like Hochstrasser wasn't just depicting an object, but capturing a memory. The light is pretty even across both objects which makes me think of the work of Charles Sheeler; both artists shared a kind of analytical, loving gaze. Anyway, it's these details, the tiny imperfections and the loving observation, that makes this more than just a drawing, it's a meditation.
