Editor: This is Joseph Pennell's 1904 etching, "Saint James' Palace, from Saint James' Street." It has such a detailed and historical feel; almost like stepping back in time. What jumps out at you when you look at this image? Curator: For me, it’s about the enduring power of place, and what survives despite social change. Look at how Pennell renders the Palace; it's solid, almost defiant, while the figures are ephemeral, transient. Does this contrast speak to a longing for stability amidst the bustle of modern London? What symbols endure? The clock tower tells us time passes no matter what. The gate welcomes visitors in to this very day. The palace carries collective memory. Editor: That’s a great point about the contrast between the permanent architecture and the fleeting figures. The clock tower is definitely prominent. Do you think Pennell was making a statement about British identity? Curator: I think Pennell recognized the Palace as a potent emblem. It represents monarchy, tradition, perhaps even empire. How might an American artist like Pennell, working in London, perceive those symbols differently than a British artist? There’s perhaps a certain romanticism, a yearning for a history that is both grand and also, in some ways, unattainable. Does it invoke that for you as well? Editor: I can see that. As an outsider, maybe he saw something special that someone British might take for granted. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Curator: My pleasure. It's been insightful hearing your perspective as well. Seeing how history lives within a place gives us more respect for the present.
