Carl Hoeckner made this artwork, titled 'Must', using printmaking techniques. It’s hard to put a date on this one, but it's interesting to consider how the artist uses mark making to create such a disturbing image. The monochromatic palette here is really effective in conveying a sense of dread. Look at the texture he achieves with the lines, they are almost vibrating with the intensity of the scene. Notice the way the figures are rendered, particularly the central one. Its weight seems to press down on the other figures, a physical manifestation of oppression. The repetition of forms and the oppressive atmosphere remind me of Kathe Kollwitz. Ultimately, this is a piece that resists easy answers. It invites us to grapple with complex emotions and consider the darker aspects of the human condition, even if we're not quite sure what all the symbols and meanings are.
