Federico Barocci created this fragment of a mountain landscape with pen and brown ink, around the late 16th century. The Counter-Reformation period in which Barocci worked was a time of immense change, with art serving as a tool for religious and political expression. In this drawing, Barocci departs from traditional landscape depictions which often served as background to human activity. The raw, rugged mountains command our attention. There is an emphasis on the sublime power of nature, rather than an idealized background. The quick, fluid lines add to the emotional intensity of the work, inviting viewers to contemplate the overwhelming force of the natural world. Barocci’s drawing captures a landscape free from the constraints of human narrative, reflecting a broader shift towards emotional and expressive forms of art. It’s a reminder of art's capacity to evoke deep feelings and connect us to something larger than ourselves.
