This Fotoreproductie van ontwerptekening met fruitplukkers voor glas-in-loodraam, a design drawing for stained glass, was made by Cornelis Albertus Deul. The monochromatic palette, a symphony in greyscale, makes me think about the process of translating color into form, and vice versa. I’m drawn to the way Deul uses line and shadow to define the figures, each mark a deliberate step in the dance between representation and abstraction. Look at how the light catches the fruit picker's brow, the subtle shading conveying depth and volume. The texture of the paper, the visible strokes, they all contribute to the feeling of a moment captured, a fleeting glimpse into a world of labor and abundance. Deul's work reminds me a little of Käthe Kollwitz, in the way they both use graphic means to depict working people. Art is this ongoing conversation, isn't it? A conversation where meanings are never fixed, and where the best works open up new ways of seeing and feeling.
