This sheet of textile designs was created by an anonymous artist, and contains twenty-six different designs for silk fabrics. You could say this piece is about looking, or even looking closely, but it's also about the labor of looking, and labor in general. My eye goes to the top right, where the artist uses gentle blues to mimic rippling water, the composition of the artwork as a whole is like a sea of infinite possibility. Each design has a different feeling. From the simple stripes and dots, to the geometric patterns and swirling motifs. The artist seems to have been unafraid of hard work. This piece reminds me of Anni Albers, and her weaving practice at the Bauhaus. The spirit of both artists is experimental, deeply considered, and wonderfully playful. Both use pattern to evoke a sense of calm and a kind of visual pleasure. For both, the process feels more important than making a ‘precious’ or finished object.
