Curatorial notes

Robert van den Hoecke created this print called Tent voor een boerderij, or Tent for a Farm, likely sometime in the mid-17th century, using etching. The nature of printmaking, a multiplication of line by way of an acid bath, emphasizes the contrast between light and dark. Think about how labor appears in the final image. There are many people who appear to be working in the scene, but of course van den Hoecke was also laboring to produce this image. The scene depicts everyday life, perhaps a market outside of a farmhouse. What might seem like a simple scene is rendered with incredible delicacy, created by way of sophisticated craft. The artist’s skillful rendering is a testament to the value and complexity inherent in creative production, as much then as now.
