Here's a drawing of a glass, made anonymously, and rendered in subtle tones and shades. I can imagine the artist carefully considering their subject, trying to work out the best way to capture it in paint; maybe trying to work out exactly what it is that makes glass, glass. What's the best way to make it look see-through? Can you capture something’s essence, its soul, through drawing it over and over again? Is it even possible? Look at the variations of color: the soft grey, the cool greys, and the dark, solid greys that give it a base and weight. I wonder if they made many versions of this glass. Maybe this was an exercise, or something more akin to meditation. To repeat, and repeat, to get it right. Painting always means engaging in an ongoing exchange of ideas, so even when we don't know the artist, we can guess at their intentions.
