This is Fernanda Suarez's haunting image of Capricorn, made sometime in the 20th century. Here, the artist blends human, animal, and mythical elements into a single evocative figure. Note the figure’s sinuous tail that coils around the rocky landscape, it immediately evokes images of ancient sea deities and the primal connection between the earthly and aquatic realms. But it is the horns that truly capture our attention. These striking antlers reach skyward, reminiscent of ancient pagan deities. The horns, emblems of power and wildness, have appeared throughout art history from the horned god Pan to Moses's horned depictions. In stark contrast, the creature's vulnerable, human gaze projects an almost melancholic awareness, a deep psychological exploration of our complex relationship with nature. The dark colour palette and shadowed backdrop augment the air of mystery and introspection. Like a recurring dream, the symbols resonate, weaving through time, and mirroring humanity's persistent quest to comprehend our place in the world.
