Maria Bozoky made these 'Southern Fisherman Houses' with crayon, or maybe pastel—you can see the grain of the paper coming through. I can feel the artist, standing right here, squinting in the sunlight. It feels like the blue crayon was really dragged across the surface, with a lot of pressure, while the red is more like a scribble, on top of a heavy black scribble of the cat. Look how those lines dance and overlap, creating a real sense of depth and texture. It is like she tries to be organized with one colour, then can’t help but mess it all up with another. This reminds me a little of Joan Mitchell’s freehand pastel drawings, as if Bozoky is also trying to capture a memory, fleeting and impressionistic. This kind of art isn't about perfection; it’s about feeling, about capturing a moment in time, and sharing it with others. After all, we’re all just trying to figure things out together, one drawing, one painting, one idea at a time.
