John Greenwood created this engraving, titled "Tavern Scene with a Farmer Trying to Peek Under a Woman's Skirt," in the 18th century. It’s a scene of raucous, often bawdy, social interaction. Made during a time of significant social stratification, the image tells us a lot about the social codes of its time. Note the sharp contrast between the relatively well-to-do farmers and the somewhat disreputable innkeeper, who seems to be enjoying their antics. The farmers, with their boisterous laughter and carefree attitudes, represent a rising social class with newfound economic power. The innkeeper, on the other hand, embodies a more traditional, perhaps even declining, social order. To truly understand a work like this, we need to dig into the visual and textual sources of the time. Popular prints, ballads, and other forms of social commentary can provide insights into the social tensions and cultural values at play. Art is always a product of its time, shaped by the institutions and social forces that surround it.
