Curatorial notes
Here is a monochromatic photograph by V. Wolfenstein, titled 'Erezaal in een kazerne van de Svea livgarde in Stockholm', depicting an interior space. The visual impression is one of geometric rigidity contrasted with decorative excess. Windows punctuate the back wall, their rectangular frames imposing a grid-like structure, while hanging tapestries soften the angularity. The chandelier dominates the space, its ornate design offering a counterpoint to the room's otherwise austere composition. This interplay between form and decoration invites us to consider the photograph within the context of architectural representation. The photograph, then, becomes a discourse on the very nature of visibility, power and control within institutional settings.
