Robert Frank made "Dress shop--Los Angeles," a photograph, sometime in the twentieth century. Look at this quiet photograph, almost a stage set, maybe a surreal one. The figures are posed, mannequin-like, but there is a strange energy between them. I imagine Frank saw a kind of off-kilter glamour. I'm thinking about the way the composition is structured. A fashionably dressed woman in the foreground, and behind her, maybe she is caught in the act of whispering something. Then there is a mannequin in the corner. Is she the subject of the gossip? Robert Frank invites us into his world of street photography. The scene is spontaneous, but there is a deep sense of intrigue and human connection. Maybe we are all mannequins? Frank and his peers explored the city as a site of endless inspiration, using their art to challenge our perceptions. They remind us that the most profound discoveries often lie in the everyday.
