Curatorial notes

Augustus Charles Pugin created this preliminary pencil study of Temple Church, a component of the larger "Microcosm of London" project. Pugin, who was the son of a Swiss-French draughtsman, came from a family of architectural designers. It's hard not to think of the cultural and political upheaval of early 19th century London while examining this drawing. Pugin's work captures the atmosphere of a society undergoing enormous change. Notice the soaring arches and elaborate columns of the church. It's a style that evokes not just grandeur but also introspection. As you consider this picture, try to imagine the people who frequented this space: what social classes did they belong to, and what impact did historical events have on their identities? It's a place where social position and personal experiences would have converged. This artwork serves as a reminder of how architecture, identity, and history are all linked, encouraging us to consider the complex narratives contained within apparently quiet locations.
