Tess Jaray made this print, using black lines on paper to create 'Vault'. Imagine her at work, maybe listening to music, very focused, thinking hard. I can relate to the way Jaray uses line here to build up a form, very slowly, very methodically. You can see that the shape is built up incrementally with each stripe, and how she has to be so precise with where she puts them. Each line is carefully positioned to create an optical illusion of depth and space. It's fascinating how such simple means can create such a complex effect. She's following in the footsteps of artists like Bridget Riley and Victor Vasarely, but also moving it forward and making it her own. There’s a conversation happening across time and space, with artists inspiring each other to push the boundaries of what’s possible. Each work is an experiment, embracing uncertainty, and open to multiple interpretations.
