Curatorial notes
Christoffel van Sichem I created this portrait of Bernardus Knipperdolling, the Anabaptist prophet, through the art of engraving. Dominating the upper-left corner, we see a hand clutching a sword, encircled by a laurel wreath. The sword, an ancient symbol of power and justice, takes on a sharper, more rebellious edge in this context, evoking the fervor of the Anabaptist movement. The wreath may initially symbolize honor, but may be interpreted as a premonition of martyrdom. Think of Judith beheading Holofernes, or David holding Goliath's head. The sword, wielded, becomes a symbol of radical change. This potent image taps into our collective memory, and the complex interplay between faith, power, and sacrifice. The emotional weight of such symbols engages us, resonating within our subconscious. Symbols resurface, evolve, and take on new meanings across time.
