This untitled artwork was created by Zdzislaw Beksinski, using oil paint on canvas. Beksinski was very particular about his materials; he prepared his canvases meticulously, often applying multiple layers of gesso to achieve an exceptionally smooth surface. The painting shows an androgynous figure playing a trumpet. Its decayed appearance results from the artist’s mastery of glazing techniques, allowing him to build up layers of translucent color. Beksinski often worked from dark to light, and the smooth canvas allowed him to create incredible detail. The effect is eerie and unsettling, a vision of a world where even music is somehow corrupted. Beksinski’s working methods reflect his architectural training, and rigorous attention to detail. It suggests a dystopian view of industrialization, a world where humanity is subsumed by machinery. Ultimately, it's a powerful reminder of the skill involved in transforming raw materials into something deeply meaningful.
