Curatorial notes

Curator: This striking image, simply titled "Untitled (enormous crowd of people on city street, seen from above)" by Jack Gould, captures a dense gathering. The dimensions of the image are roughly 10 by 13 centimeters. Editor: My first thought is claustrophobia. The sheer number of people, packed tightly together, creates an overwhelming feeling of compression. It’s an unsettling image. Curator: It's compelling to consider the event that drew such a crowd. The photo lacks contextual clues, inviting speculation about its historical moment and social significance. What brought all these people together? Editor: Exactly. The lack of information is almost a statement in itself. Are we meant to focus on the collective, erasing individual identities, or to question the power dynamics at play in such a mass? Who is missing, and why? Curator: A pertinent question, indeed. Gould’s choice of perspective, high above, further emphasizes the scale and anonymity of the gathering, obscuring distinctions. Editor: It makes you wonder about the photographer's own position, both literally and figuratively. What was Gould trying to say about collective action, or perhaps collective vulnerability, at this historical juncture? Curator: Food for thought. Editor: Definitely a work that sparks conversation, even with its unknowns.
