Editor: So, this is an untitled photograph by Jack Gould, showing a chimp playing a big drum. It’s a pretty small print. I’m struck by the theatricality of it all. What do you make of it? Curator: It's a curious image, isn’t it? The chimp, almost human in its posture, banging away... it reminds me of childhood circuses, but tinged with a certain… melancholy. Don’t you feel it? Editor: I do, now that you mention it. It's a bit sad. Curator: Maybe it's the black and white, or the faded backdrop. Perhaps Gould was suggesting something about performance, about being trapped in a role? Makes you wonder, doesn't it? Editor: Definitely gives you something to think about. Thanks!
