This anonymous Rabbit Still Bank is a ceramic glazed object of unknown date. I imagine the artist dipping the earthenware form into a glossy brown and green glaze and hoping for the best. It’s that shiny surface that really gets me – it’s all about the drip! When the glaze is wet, the artist must be thinking, ‘Oh please, let it be amazing’. It's as if the glaze is a living, breathing thing, crawling and mingling, creating these unpredictable effects. The surface reveals the touch of the maker, the way the glaze pools and settles, creating these beautiful textures and variations in color. Ceramics is a conversation that so many artists have joined in with over the years, from Lucie Rie to Betty Woodman, and of course, it goes back millennia. You can just imagine the community kiln being fired up and everyone crossing their fingers! This little rabbit embodies that tradition with charm. It’s a reminder that art is often about embracing chance and letting the material take the lead.
