This is a sheet from a sketchbook by J.A. Jerichau (II). It's full of writing in Danish, and you can feel the artist's hand moving across the page. It gives me the sense of being an intimate encounter with the artist's thought processes. I wonder what it was like for Jerichau to create this piece. What thoughts were swirling around in their head as they jotted down these words? The letters are looping and looping, pulling you in. It’s interesting to note that he died quite young, so it makes one wonder about the intensity with which he must have been working. It reminds me of other artists who combined text and image, like Cy Twombly or even some of Basquiat’s work. Artists are always having a dialogue with each other, riffing on ideas, and pushing the boundaries of what art can be. There's a real freedom in embracing that ambiguity, allowing for different interpretations and meanings to emerge over time.
