Editor: Richard Long’s "Small White Pebble Circles," from the Tate collection, it’s so minimal and elemental! What significance do you find in his use of the circle? Curator: The circle, an ancient symbol, echoes wholeness, the infinite, cycles of life. Long's placement of pebbles invites reflection on humanity's relationship with nature. How does this resonate with you? Editor: I guess it makes me think about how temporary we are in comparison to the age of the stones! Curator: Precisely. The pebble, a fragment of geological time, when arranged, becomes a poignant reminder of both our transient nature and enduring connection to the earth. Editor: This connection between impermanence and the ancient origins is something that I didn't realize until this moment.

Since 1967 Long has produced sculptures using natural materials which he collects during his long cross-country walks. Sometimes they are assembled in the same rural sites in which he finds the materials, sometimes he brings them inside the gallery spaces. Long has described the subject of his work as ‘a balance between patterns of nature and the formalism of human abstract ideas, like lines and circles. It is where my human characteristics meet the natural forces and patterns of the world.’ Gallery label, February 2011
