This photographic portrait of an unknown boy with a wheelbarrow was made by G.G. van der Zwaag. It’s monochromatic, giving it this timeless feel, but also creating a sense of distance. I love how the texture of the background blurs into abstraction. It reminds me of those old studio backdrops, trying to evoke a grand landscape but ending up feeling like a dream, or a half-remembered place. And that little wheelbarrow, slightly out of focus, feels almost like a prop from a play. It's solid, three dimensional, yet appears staged and artificial in equal measure. The boy is gripping a T-shaped bar which suggests his control of this vehicle and his wider life. It's got this strange mix of posed formality and raw innocence. It reminds me a bit of some of August Sander's portraits, that same desire to capture a person, an era, a sense of life unfolding, even if we don't know exactly who the boy is, or what his future holds. Art doesn't always need to give us answers; sometimes, it's enough to just ask the questions.
