Inuzuka Taisui made this woodblock print of Morning Glories, and you can just feel the process in it. The layering of colors, the grain of the wood, it's all part of the story. What strikes me most is the texture. It’s so delicate, so airy. The colours aren’t blended like in a painting, they’re set alongside each other, like the different feelings you have in the morning. I particularly love how the red flower, almost looks like it's glowing from within. This piece reminds me of some of Hiroshige's prints, there’s a similar appreciation for the small things, like a single flower. And, like all great art, it's open to interpretation. Is it about the beauty of nature? The passage of time? Maybe it's just a reminder to stop and smell the morning glories.
