This photograph of the Hôtel Gouthières at 6 rue Pierre Bulet was captured by Eugène Atget. I love Atget. Here, it's like he’s interested in the question of thresholds, picturing the elaborate over-door of a Parisian interior. You can see the texture of the plasterwork, as well as the winged figures in the frieze. He was wandering around Paris with his camera, so maybe he saw this doorway and it struck him. He probably had to wait for the right light to catch all of that incredible detail. Imagine the hours he spent lugging that heavy equipment around the city. Photographers like Atget were capturing moments, places, and details with a camera and the unique perspective that they had. And that conversation continues to inspire us today. Art is one big feedback loop.
