Alekos Kontopoulos created this evocative painting, ‘Interior’, with oil on canvas. The painting presents us with an abstract construction, a chaotic arrangement of shapes and colors. We see rectangles and cubes layered in earthy tones; the red and white forms are reminiscent of domestic scenes or architectural structures. It's as if Kontopoulos seeks to distill the essence of domestic life, yet presents it in a dreamlike fragmentation. The chaotic scene is not unlike the modern city. Just as the shapes and colors within the painting interact, so too do the cultural symbols and archetypes within the collective human consciousness. Looking at this arrangement of shapes, one can see in their repetition and alteration the echoes of motifs found in the most ancient art forms. Although fragmented, there is a deep, subconscious emotional pull that touches something primal and powerful in us.
