This armor was made for Infante Luis, Prince of Asturias, sometime between 1707 and 1724, likely in France. The maker Jean Drouart skillfully combined steel and gold to create an object that speaks volumes about power and status. The steel of the armor was forged and shaped with great precision, while gold was painstakingly applied to embellish the surface. It is not just the cost of the materials that mattered, but the labor involved, the sheer number of hours spent on the design and construction, and the mastery of craft traditions, that elevated this armor to the level of art. The armor is a testament to the expertise of the artisans who made it, but it is also representative of the vast resources commanded by royalty. These objects were status symbols, designed to impress and intimidate. Considering the materials, the handwork, and the historical context, we see how this armor transcends mere functionality, and becomes an eloquent expression of social hierarchy.
