Curatorial notes
This photograph, taken in Cairo by Jean Pascal Sébah, presents us with a portrait of an unknown woman and child. Here, the mother carries her child upon her shoulders, shrouded in dark fabric that contrasts with the child’s bare skin. This image evokes the ancient motif of maternity, a timeless symbol deeply ingrained in our collective consciousness. One might recall the Madonna and Child, a cornerstone of Christian iconography, where the mother cradles the infant Jesus. Yet, here, the roles are reversed. The child sits atop the mother, a subtle inversion that speaks to the enduring strength and resilience of motherhood in different cultural contexts. The fabric conceals yet also emphasizes her presence, much like the veiling of goddesses in antiquity, pointing to a hidden power and mystery. Consider how such images resonate across time, echoing through epochs and cultures, their meanings ever-evolving. This photograph, therefore, is not merely a record but a living emblem of shared human experience.
