Curatorial notes
Eugène Boudin captured this view of 'The Bay of Douarnenez' using oil on canvas. The composition presents a tripartite structure: the rugged, dark rocks in the foreground, a tranquil expanse of water in the middle, and the light-filled sky above. The horizontal lines create a sense of depth, drawing the eye from the textured rocks to the distant horizon. Boudin masterfully uses color to define space, with the blues of the water subtly shifting to meet the sky. In this painting, Boudin explores a dichotomy. While the rocks are rendered with impasto, the sky is expressed with delicate brushwork. The sea, acting as a liminal space, captures a sense of tranquility. The composition and color palette evoke both calmness and contemplation. Boudin invites us to reflect on the dynamic interplay between the solidity of earth and the ephemerality of sky and sea.
