Curator: This watercolor illustration, dating back to 1850, is entitled "Maskerade van de Leidse studenten, 1850 (plaat 1)," attributed to Carel Christiaan Antony Last and currently held at the Rijksmuseum. It captures a scene of what appears to be a masquerade of students in Leiden. Editor: Immediately striking is the composition. The contrast in colors and shapes; figures on horseback facing figures marching shoulder to shoulder, the way it's bisected right down the middle, dividing the formations of students—creates a really powerful sense of order and theatre. Curator: Indeed. What Last is depicting here is likely tied to the historical performances put on by student societies in Leiden, drawing on earlier periods. These masquerades would become important expressions of student identity. Notice the flag carried with such confidence, signaling pride. Editor: The choice of watercolor and pen really accentuates the precision, especially in their outfits and instruments, doesn't it? See how the light reflects off the drawn and painted surfaces. Curator: The accuracy is key. The very performance of these historical masquerades was a way for the students to negotiate their own place in Dutch history. Editor: Despite that careful rendering of clothing and historical markers, I detect a sense of spontaneity, almost caricature, particularly in their expressions. It lightens the mood. It makes this about youthful vitality as well as some sort of performance of established culture. Curator: Yes, Last has really caught this duality. By the 1850s these events were, also expressions of unity and tradition. It's academic art playing with themes from Romanticism to comment on culture in transition. Editor: Looking at it, I get the sense Last appreciated the exuberance of this tradition, capturing both a fleeting moment and a lasting expression of community spirit. Curator: It certainly provides an engaging glimpse into student life in 19th-century Leiden, connecting youthful joy with national identity.
