This drawing, by Brice Marden, is made using graphite on paper. While these are familiar materials, what makes this work so compelling is the layered application of the graphite. Look closely, and you can see the build-up of marks, the varying pressure of the artist's hand as he moves across the page. The graphite is almost sculptural in its density, particularly in the upper section. The paper itself becomes a receptive field, absorbing the material like a sponge. Marden coaxes depth and texture out of the graphite, almost like a mason with stone. The process involves both addition and subtraction, building up layers and then rubbing them back to reveal the surface beneath. The contrast between the dark, worked areas and the lighter, untouched spaces gives the drawing a powerful sense of tension. It makes us consider the labor involved in the production process, as well as the intentionality behind each mark. Ultimately, the meaning of this work resides in the transformation of simple materials through a repetitive, almost meditative process, blurring the boundaries between drawing and object.
