This sepia toned photograph, *Gezicht op het Huis Adelaarshoek te Hattem*, was made by an anonymous photographer, and it captures something of a ghost. See how the photograph almost blends into the cream color of the mount? The anonymous photographer of this building lets their subject define the tonal range, like a quiet act of collaboration. The dark vertical line running across the image creates an abstract interruption that's hard to ignore. It's a strange accident, right? What does this mark do to the image? It’s kind of like a drawing on top, cutting the building into pieces. At first, it’s a distraction, but the more I look at this line, the more it becomes part of the image's history, even echoing the angles of the house. I think about Atget when I look at this image, another documentarian who captured buildings with such straightforwardness. Here, the artist's hand is hidden behind the mechanics of the camera, but the photograph still makes room for the unexpected.
