Here’s an ‘Untitled’ oil on canvas painting by Lyubov Popova where the approach feels direct, almost brutal in its simplicity. It's all about the push and pull, the give and take of painting, of making something from nothing. The surface is built up with bold, contrasting blocks of black and white. You can almost feel Popova’s hand moving the brush across the canvas. Look at the texture, so raw and unrefined. It's not about hiding the process but celebrating it. The paint is thick in some areas, thin in others, transparent here, opaque there, creating a dynamic interplay of light and shadow. Notice the way the white bar at the top left seems to slice through the darkness, creating a sense of depth and movement. Popova makes me think of other artists like Kazimir Malevich, who were pushing the boundaries of abstraction, exploring the fundamental elements of form and color. Just like Popova, they weren't interested in easy answers but in asking big questions about what art could be.
